Type Fight

Type Fight is one of my "must check on today before I do anything else" sort of indulgences. Much like my numerous style and design blogs, I have to do my daily routine check and see who the newbies are going head-to-head.

Type Fight is a project to distract Drew Roper and Ryan Paule from their day-to-day grind. Every so often, they will design the same letter and pin them against each other in the typographic ring to battle it out for best looking character. It's fantastic! Each letter designer has their own statistics (nickname, rated at, height, weight, birth date, stance, reach, university, and current location) and a short biography.

The latest post was a "Guest Fight." Number 10 to be specific. It featured two very different designs of the letter "N" by Taylor Goad and Scott Hill. Take a look below at the two designs and their background information and go on over to and vote for your favorite.

Designer of the Day: Jude Landry

Jude Landry is one of the most refreshing and versatile designers and illustrators I've ever come across. It's very common to pinpoint a style when browsing most portfolios and almost expected, but when it comes to the work by Jude, good luck trying to figure him out. You can literally view a perfectly crafted letter composed of delicate swirls and intricate lines printed with a silver spot color on fudge brown paper promoting a lecture by the wonderful Jessica Hische, and right after, a bold illustration of an oil covered octopus gripping five coastal states, created to raise awareness and funds for the cleanup of the 2010 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill.

Native to New Iberia, Louisiana, Jude completed both a BFA and an MFA in Graphic Design from Louisiana Tech University. Not long after graduation, he got married and moved to Illinois to work as an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Illinois State University. In 2009, he accepted a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Art at Mississippi State University.

With recognition from Communication Arts to Print to CMYK, Jude has made waves with his wonderful work. It's evident he simply enjoys designing and illustrating. Take a look at some of my favorite pieces of his below. You can also view the remainder of his portfolio at his website Enjoy!

Kinfolk Vol. 2

My husband and I always have our own little Christmas before heading to the mountains to celebrate with my family and of course, every year, we can't wait to give our gifts. This year we made it to the 20th before almost exploding with excitement.

It just so happened that one of my wonderful gifts was Volume 2 of Kinfolk Magazine and I was so happy! Kinfolk celebrates the beauty and simplicity of small gatherings between artists and other creatives. It truly is a special relationship that artists have with each other. No one quite understands you like another creative and it's such a unique thing. This beautifully laid out magazine is filled with stories and fantastic photos of people just enjoying getting together. It's a glimpse into those special moments where good friends and creative people simply delight in good food, nature, table settings, and conversation.

Volume 2 includes stories about assembling during the fall and winter months: morning walks, using natural candlelight, escaping with friends for a weekend retreat in the mountains or on the coast, and revisiting nostalgic traditions.

My favorite article is titled "The Season of Intentional Gatherings." There is a quote at the beginning by John Berger that says, "Every city has a sex and an age which have nothing to do with demography. Rome is feminine. So is Odessa. London is a teenager, an urchin, and in this, hasn't changed since the time of Dickens. Paris, I believe, is a man in his twenties in love with an older woman." I love the personification of cities in this quote and throughout the article and how different the gatherings are throughout the seasons because of the particular "qualities" of a city. It's so beautiful and I can't help but smile every time I read it.

Obviously, I really enjoy getting lost in this magazine and can't wait to be a part of a creative community that holds such gatherings. Maybe one day I'll contribute to Kinfolk but for now I'm perfectly content with having my own lovely copy. Look forward to Volume 3!

The Staves

There is nothing like beautiful music to inspire great design and ideas. The Staves are one of my favorite up-and-coming groups and lately they've been my go-to sound for the inspiration of my most recent sketches and type pieces. There's something about their fluid vocals and simple sound that is absolutely mesmerizing. The perfect mashup of Birdy and the Civil Wars, these ladies will make you fall in love with them again and again. I know I do.

Also, their Benji Davies and Jim Field-directed video "Mexico" is alluring. I'm absolutely infatuated with the natural beauty contrasting a bleary setting. As the song continues, simple animated illustrations bring the setting to life until it's fully vibrant with illuminated patterns. It's a beautiful video for a beautiful song.

Charmaine Olivia

I've been a long time admirer of Charmaine Olivia. Years ago I did a painting of a woman in a knights helmet with feathers and was compared to her in class. Curiously,  I looked up some of her work and was instantly captivated and in awe of how similar we were in so many ways right down to the serious dreamer attitude. Now all I need is a badass tattoo.

Here's what she says about herself:

"My name is Charmaine Olivia. I’m a full-time artist living and loving in San Francisco. I am inspired by skulls, glass bottles and messy hair. I dream every single night and I never get bored. 

I work in a variety of media, my favorites are oil and ink. I am currently preparing for my solo show at “Shooting Gallery“, San Francisco in January 2012. My illustrations, photography and paintings have appeared in magazines throughout the world. You can find my prints and designs at Urban Outfitters, Volcom Stone, Element, Nylon Magazine, Eyes on Walls, Envelop, Threadless, Bolia, Society6."

Like myself, the majority of her work is of female subjects. She doesn't really go into why she chooses to illustrate mainly females, but I would imagine it is because it's directly relatable. Personally, I'm constantly changing in my mood, experiences, appearance, opinions, and then simply dreaming of what was, is, or could be. To manifest those into actual figures can be beautiful and fulfilling. That's what I see when I look at her pieces and that's what I feel when I create my own. I'm flattered to be compared to such a great artist.

So check out her gorgeous pieces of art. I'll try not to go crazy posting everything I like. Hopefully I'll have many hanging in my home one day. You should too!

Invisible Creature: Don & Ryan Clark

If you have good taste in music (or design) then you've more than often come across some of the amazing work by Invisible Creature. Brothers Don and Ryan Clark, influenced by generations of creative passion and skill, combined their love and time in the music scene with design and settled in Seattle’s ever-blossoming artistic frontier. After years of experience and growth with their first company, Asterik Studio, the brothers split from their good friends and launched Invisible Creatures together.

Since then Invisible Creatures has received 4 Grammy nominations for music packaging, and have worked with clients such as Target, Nike, New York Times, Esquire, Wired, Interscope, Sony, Universal, Warner Brothers, Nickelodeon, Nordstrom and MTV- to name a few. Their work has also been featured in the pages of Print, HOW, Communication Arts, IdN, Step, in addition to publications of the hard-bound variety by publishers such as Chronicle, Juxtapoz, Die Gestalten Verlag and Fantagraphics.

They're style is clean yet colorful, packed yet controlled.  I guess you could compare it to that of good punk music, which they also succeed in creating.

If you're not impressed by their long list of high end clients, featured publications, or awards then check out the work for yourself. I personally guarantee you won't be disappointed.
